What is Benzene?
Benzene is a chemical compound that’s produced when natural oils and other natural products are burned. Some substances that produce benzene when burned include coal, gasoline, and plastics. People working in these environments are especially susceptible to benzene exposure:
- Factor workers who work with solvents or adhesives
- Barge and dock laborers
- Auto mechanics
- Painters
- Anyone working with pesticides, chemicals, rubber, or leather
Benzene has been confirmed to be a cancer-causing agent or a carcinogen. It has been officially designated as such by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Exposure is Cumulative
Occasional exposure isn’t likely to cause leukemia, but long-term and frequent exposure raise the risks. As you inhale more fumes, cell damage worsens over time. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration established guidelines that limit exposure to 1 part-per-million in a single eight-hour workday. For part-time exposure, the rating is 5 parts-per-million in any 15 minute period.
