Social security payments are meant to help people the Social Security Administration has determined to be disabled. The law explicitly states that the injury must prevent a person from working for a year or the injury will ultimately result in the demise of the person. Here are some recommended steps to take before filling out the Social Security Disability Application.
Basic Requirements
There are a few very basic requirements for collecting social security benefits. One is that the beneficiary must be at least 18 years old. The second is that the beneficiary must be living within the borders of an American state or a territory in American possession.
Work Credits
Social Security will require the recipient to have been working in the recent past and to have earned a specific number of work credits. They determine this by giving work credits to all adult workers who have a valid Social Security number. Social Security requires that any claimants possess a minimum of 40 work credits. One work credit is equal to $1,220 earned either being employed by another or by being self-employed.
Younger Workers
There are exceptions for younger workers who become disabled. These rules state that younger workers under the age of 24 may qualify for disability if they have received six work credits. Workers between the ages of 24 and 31 need to have work credits for half the years between the age of 24 and the age they became disabled. If this seems confusing, there are agencies and even attorneys who aid in filling out the Social Security Disability Application.
Definition Of Disability
The official definition of disability for collecting Social Security is being disabled for longer than a year, the injury prevents the worker from performing the job they did before they became injured, and the injury substantially prevents them from transitioning to another line of work. There is also a list of eligible conditions that qualify, which can be found on the SSA website.
